Gaetano Guadagnini from 1851
An ideal romantic guitar for lovers of vintage guitars.
The famous luthier Gaetano Guadagnini
The grandson of the renowned luthier G.B. Guadagnini, Gaetano II took over the family workshop in 1817, at just 21 years of age. He first continued the family’s tradition of restoring and repairing string instruments before devoting himself fully to guitar making — a craft in which he soon excelled.
A skilled craftsman and a keen ear for tone, Gaetano developed a distinctive style, while drawing inspiration from the French influences that were then prominent in Turin. His guitars and violins, produced between 1830 and 1840, are known for their rich, expressive sound and the graceful elegance characteristic of the great European school of lutherie.
A man of his time, he collaborated with the nobleman and violin maker Alessandro D’Espine, and passed on his knowledge to his half-brother Felice, who continued the family tradition. Today, Gaetano’s instruments are rare and highly valued, bearing witness to a refined craftsmanship and to an era when Italian lutherie was reinventing itself between tradition and modernity.
